What We Do

Liberation Scholars is a team of legally liberated professionals that provides direct support services for system-impacted and recovering students to promote sustainable reentry to campus and the greater community through education.

Liberation Scholars (established as Reentry Scholars in 2018) is part of the Evergreen Prison Education Project, a liberation education and reintegration network based at The Evergreen State College. The network includes: Gateways for Incarcerated Youth, the Sustainability in Prisons Project, and Evergreen Inside.

Holistic Advising

We take a holistic approach to advising students and look to address everything from a student’s basic needs to academic and career advising. Legally liberated students come to us facing many challenges. Our goal is to work with legally liberated students to mitigate any challenges and barriers they may face as they transition from incarceration to campus by providing a welcoming and supportive community of scholars.

College Navigation

We provide support throughout the college application process, from the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to college applications to transcript assessment. Once a student is admitted we assist with class registration and make introductions to other student success professionals on campus such as Campus Housing and Student Employment.

Advocacy and Support

We take a proactive approach to empower and advocate for the students we serve throughout their time at Evergreen – and beyond. Our services include advocacy and support when needed externally with the Department of Corrections and internally at The Evergreen State College.

Peer Mentoring

Liberation Scholars includes a cohort of Liberation Peers who serve their fellow students by orienting them to the campus community, introducing them to a broad range of student support services, and providing peer mentorship to our students.

Leadership and Career Development

We believe student leadership can be key to a student’s development as a professional. Not only do students gain practical experience they can use on their resumes, but it also provides students networking opportunities with other students, staff, faculty, and college leadership.

Transitional Housing

Our Liberation Scholars Transitional Housing program provides safe, suitable, clean and sober housing for Evergreen students who are under Community Corrections supervised probation/parole.
