I chose Evergreen for the distinct sense of community and the hands-on approach to education—it was a far more appealing option to me as an active learner than a more cookie-cutter state 4 year.
Everyone knows and cares about each other at Evergreen, and there is a very real sense of community. Additionally, you are allowed to pursue whatever you're passionate about, and will get back as much as you put in.
I wouldn't be here without aid and scholarships. I do not come from a privileged background and scholarships and grants are what made the difference for me between having a future or being stuck living with my adoptive father in a one-bedroom apartment working paycheck to paycheck.
It is my suddenly realized chance at upward mobility that has galvanized me into trying to give back to the institution which has helped me to try and achieve my dreams.
Currently I am enrolled in the Integrated Natural Science program, as I am interested in getting involved in environmental law and policy and additionally wish to challenge myself by getting involved in fields that are not my traditional forte.
I have participated in Lobby Day with the Geoduck Student Union and have participated with WASHPIRG. I especially enjoy student activities though, and have long been a contributing member of multiple clubs, perhaps most fondly helping to run Evergreen's annual convention Chibi Chibi Con.
I also help run the college radio station, KAOS, in my role as production technician, helping to bring news, information and original student broadcasting to the greater Olympia area, including Democracy Now with Amy Goodman as well as student and community produced programming.
Next year I plan to study abroad in Ireland, in a faculty led program taught by Prof. Sean Williams, where I will be learning Irish history, culture and language.
