Andrew Beattie (he/him) currently serves as Internal Communications Liaison. These efforts include working closely with an advisory committee on developing processes and policy for communications with faculty, staff, and students.

Born and raised in the South Sound, Andrew’s work has been dedicated to education and public programs, with a strong connection to The Evergreen State College. An MPA graduate in 2014, Andrew came to Evergreen in 2010 as the Assistant Director for Operations with the Costantino (formerly: College) Recreation Center. Following two consecutive years serving as staff representative to the Board of Trustees, Andrew was appointed as the Director of Recreation & Athletics in 2016. Andrew returned to Evergreen in spring of 2020 as Athletic Program Specialist, a project position with Wellness, Recreation and Athletics.

Prior to his time at Evergreen, Andrew obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Intercultural and Organizational Communication from Arizona State University in 2004. He then served as a Recruiting Coordinator with Intercollegiate Athletics for the University of Colorado Boulder, before returning to Olympia where he managed community recreation programs for Thurston County. In 2018-19, he served as Special Projects Manager with the University of Washington, focusing primarily on the UW waterfront, working with an advisory board, students, and staff on events, creative visioning, and a capital campaign for “The Next 100 Years” of the historic ASUW Shell House.

Andrew has worked closely with several local non-profits and community organizations, including South Sound YMCA, Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation, Earth Month Olympia, and Olympia Host Lions, where he is currently serving as an officer and board member. He also serves on a community panel, facilitated by Olympia Parks, Arts and Recreation, conducting a needs assessment for local aquatics facilities and programming.

Susan Harris (she/her) earned her Master of Public Administration in 2018 and bachelor’s degree with an emphasis in business, human resources and non-profit management in 2007, both from Evergreen. She has worked in the Office of the President at The Evergreen State College since June 2007, serving in multiple roles.

In her current role of Executive Associate to the President and Secretary to the Board of Trustees, Susan serves as an advisor to the President regarding policy, procedural and operational issues of the college. Susan manages the President’s Office operations, supervises and directs the work of administrative staff in the office. She serves in a visible leadership role for the institution, representing the President and the college to internal and external constituencies. Susan plans, coordinates, and conducts complex projects at the direction of the President; develops and manages the President’s Office operating and discretionary budgets; and executes special assignments. In this role, Susan coordinates staff work to support decision-making by the President, the Board of Trustees, and the college’s Senior Leadership Team.

Susan currently leads the work of the Employee Recognition and Appreciation Workgroup, and serves on the Campus Leadership Group Planning Committee and the Internal Student Communications workgroup.

Prior to joining Evergreen, Susan gained a breadth of experience working in multiple industries such as K-12, start-ups, tribal entities, non-profit lobbying associations, and private industry. Throughout the years, Susan enjoyed volunteering with several organizations including A Gift for Special Children, Association of Experiential Education (AEE), Rainbow/ROCQ Youth, Shelton School District, and the Thurston County Food Bank.

 

Administrative Assistant to the President

Vanessa Marenco (she/her) is an Evergreen alumna who earned her BA with a focus in Critical Indigenous Studies and Creative Writing.  She is a graduate of the Native Pathways Program and credits the program with giving her the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed at the administrative level in higher education. 

In her current role of Administrative Assistant to the President, Vanessa provides confidential administrative support to the President, Executive Vice President, and professional staff in the Office of the President and Executive Vice President. She has the primary responsibility for scheduling the President and Executive Vice President, ensuring that the college makes the best use of their time. She oversees the office’s central filing systems and financial transactions in the office.  Vanessa is the welcoming face of the President’s office and is happy to help with any inquiries or concerns brought to her.

Prior to joining Evergreen as full time staff, Vanessa held various roles throughout the college while attending as a full time student.  In addition to customer service and office assistant positions, she served as Secretary on the Native Pathways Student Governance, was co-founder and coordinator for the campus club Creating Indigenous Resistance through Culture, Language, and Education (C.I.R.C.L.E), and served as a voting board member on the Services and Activities (S&A) Board.  She knows The Evergreen State College intimately and considers Evergreen a second home.

Nora comes to Evergreen from the Department of Social & Health Services (DSHS) where she served as the Legislative Affairs & Rules Manager for the Behavioral Health Administration. Prior to DSHS, she was with the House of Representatives where she had served since 2018 as the Legislative Assistant to Representatives Kloba and Leavitt. She brings with her a strong knowledge of the legislative process, bill tracking, and extensive stakeholder, and constituent relations experience.

Nora earned her Bachelor degree from Western Washington University, and as an undergraduate there she served as the legislative liaison for the Associated Students and vice president for legislative affairs for the Washington Student Association. She represented the Western student body at the state capitol and worked with legislators, state committees and other liaisons from all public 4-year institutions/universities. Nora recently graduated from The Evergreen State College where she completed her Master of Public Administration. 

In this role of Evergreen’s Director of Government Relations, Nora serves as the liaison between the college and state government. Her primary responsibilities include advocating for college funding from the state, enhancing Evergreen’s reputation among elected and other state officials and leaders, and working as a higher education stakeholder on existing and proposed legislation.
