This 16-credit summer certificate demystifies the creative world of sound that is half of the movie-going experience. This course begins with an overview of the evolution of historical sound practices to the advent of present-day digital recording and production techniques. By learning how to listen in a visual-centric world, you will be able to critically analyze how sound is used in conjunction with visual media to maximize the emotional impact of the story. You will learn the art of location recording practices, studio techniques, microphone and recorder specifications, industry-standard software Pro Tools, and how to capture dialogue, Foley, and sound effects.

By the end of this course, students will have the skill set to enter the exciting world of location and post production sound for the moving image or other related media platforms. All projects are collaborative, including three short exercises of sync sound dialogue, Foley footsteps, and a sound effects design challenge in preparation for the final assignment. The culminating project will be a complete sound design replacement of a one-minute video containing all post production elements of a full mix that meet professional broadcast standards.
