This student-centered program allows students to commit to civic engagement within their academic plan while learning to collaborate and build allyship with the Nisqually Tribe through the Canoe Journey event.  The syllabus will be created as student academic plans are submitted to incorporate a variety of academic interests and ways to support the number of volunteers needed for the Nisqually to host Tribes from the Salish Sea, Canada, Alaska, and the Northwest.  Students will submit a proposal for their independent work at the beginning of the quarter, and the faculty will work with students to ensure their learning goals are met.

Program activities will consist of onsite volunteering, specific ways to support the promotion and safety of canoe participants, ethnobotany and medicine making, basketry and other arts, and technology as it pertains to Tribal needs for the event. And other relevant initiatives.  Articles about Tribal sovereignty, treaty rights, and contemporary entrepreneurial projects will be foundational reading, and from there, students will create their own reading lists based on their area of interest.

Students may work in groups on projects of common interest.  Students are encouraged to present what they have learned to the class and write reflectively.  A portfolio of student work will be maintained.
