What does it mean to have a sustainable art-making practice that's compatible with day-to-day life? Conversations about art often focus on the product, overlooking the process, leading to burnout and anxiety. In this program, we will take a magnifying glass to the process of art-making itself, working to develop a sustainable practice based off of curiosity, exploration, and experimentation; one that takes into account the artist as human, rather than art-making machine. Class time will be broken down into the different elements of an art practice: engaging with media for inspiration, short artmaking exercises as play, studio time for long-term projects, movement exercises to refresh the creative spirit, and discussion and feedback with the class' artmaking community. Students may work in whichever art form they choose—visual arts, creative writing, game design, performing arts, etc—turning in short creative experiments every week and workshopping them with their peers. They will come out of the class with a multimedia portfolio.
No pre-reqs required. Interested junior and senior-level students are encouraged to write to the faculty for a signature override to join this introductory program.
