This hands-on studio course introduces students to the intricate process of intaglio printmaking, with a focus on copper plate etching. Intaglio involves applying a resist (ground) to a metal plate, scribing lines into the surface, and etching those exposed areas using ferric chloride. The etched lines are then filled with oil-based ink, the plate is carefully wiped, and the image is printed using a press to produce richly detailed prints.

Students will learn the intaglio process step-by-step, including terminology, historical context, and techniques. Instruction includes safe and effective use of tools and materials, with demonstrations, handouts, and supplemental video tutorials to support diverse learning styles. Students will also gain experience operating a printing press and managing the technical demands of the medium.

Collaboration is central to the course experience. Students will work in printmaking partnerships to support each other’s process, share feedback, and troubleshoot challenges. Regular process-based reviews and a final group critique will foster visual literacy, critical thinking, and constructive dialogue, helping students refine their artistic voice and analytical skills.

The course is structured around studio-based learning, with access to the printmaking lab outside of scheduled class sessions. Students should expect to invest an additional 6–8 hours per week to complete projects during studio lab hours (based on availability – not yet scheduled). Beginning students are welcome; prior experience in printmaking or introductory art is beneficial and encouraged.
