This hands-on studio course introduces students to a range of non-traditional printmaking techniques that emphasize experimentation, innovation, and personal expression. Students will explore monotype, smart plate lithography, and gel-plate printing, and an alternative process of their choosing. Students will explore unique approaches to image-making through unconventional materials and methods. In this course, emphasis is placed on creative exploration and technical adaptability, encouraging students to develop original designs tailored to each process.
In addition to studio work, students will undertake a research project focused on one or more alternative printmaking methods, deepening their understanding of contemporary applications and historical context. Collaboration is central to the course experience: students will work in partnerships, share feedback, and engage in regular design reviews. A final group critique and print exchange will foster visual literacy, critical thinking, and community engagement.
Instruction includes in-person demonstrations, handouts, and supplemental video tutorials to support a variety of learning modalities. The course is structured around studio-based learning, with access to the printmaking lab outside of scheduled class sessions. Students should expect to invest an additional 6–8 hours per week to complete assignments and develop their projects during studio lab hours (based on availability – not yet scheduled).
Beginning students are welcome; prior experience in printmaking or introductory art is beneficial and encouraged.
