This advanced studio course is designed for students with prior printmaking experience who are ready to pursue independent work in a technique of their choice. Building on skills and knowledge acquired in earlier courses, students will develop a cohesive body of work that reflects their artistic vision, technical proficiency, and conceptual depth.

Students will select a printmaking method—such as relief, intaglio, screenprinting, or alternative processes—and focus on refining their practice through sustained exploration. Each student will write an artist statement that articulates their creative process, conceptual framework, and goals for the quarter.

To support professional development, students will choose one of the following options:

  • Conduct research on career pathways, grant writing, or portfolio development
  • Write a concise research paper on a topic related to printmaking, art history, or contemporary art practices
  • Participate in a public art exhibition, engaging with the broader art community through presentation and dialogue

Collaboration and critique remain central to the course. Students will share work-in-progress, give and receive feedback, and participate in a final group critique to strengthen their visual literacy and critical thinking.

The course includes in-person instruction, individualized guidance, and access to the printmaking lab outside of scheduled class sessions. Students should expect to invest an additional 4–6 hours per week to complete assignments and studio work (based on lab availability – not yet scheduled). This course is intended for intermediate to advanced students; prior printmaking experience is required.
