This Media Intensive will integrate skill building in hands-on media production with the study of film/video history and theory that centers representation, social/environmental justice work and experimental animation. We will emphasize nonfiction and experimental strategies using animation and live action digital video. The program is designed both for students with no prior experience and for those wishing to expand and deepen their media practices. Students will gain and sharpen essential skills of visual communication that include research, observation, collaboration, design and production, critique and reflection. A series of collaborative and individual design problems involving 2D analog animation techniques, interview-based storytelling, and visual essays will provide students opportunities to explore the distinct qualities of animated and live action imagery as they build and sharpen media production skills. To support this hands-on production work, students will engage in substantial reading and writing while analyzing and critiquing historical and contemporary films and texts. They will explore ways to challenge dominant forms and stereotypes, examine the politics of representation in relation to race, class, labor, and gender, develop an understanding of our industry’s environmental footprint, and fluency in media analysis and criticism.

Instruction in this hybrid program will include: weekly in-person workshop sessions and creative exercises in small groups that emphasize experimentation and collaboration, with masks and physical distancing as required; and remote learning via synchronous Zoom sessions and asynchronous assignments, film/video screenings and discussions, creative workshops, seminars, and critiques. The ratio of remote to in-person instruction is subject to change as we adapt to pandemic conditions and requirements to maintain our safety. Relevant campus media facilities will be safely open and available to you as conditions allow.

To successfully participate in the remote learning aspects of the program, each student needs a recent model computer that can run Zoom software, an external hard drive of at least 2TB for editing work, a worktable, a smartphone, and robust internet service. Other media equipment will be available to check out on campus through Media Loan and computer labs will be available for editing. Required student fees cover access to media equipment, software and labs, the program reader, and an animation supply kit available at the bookstore. Students are encouraged to reach out to faculty with any questions about the program, including ones about technology or equipment.
