Media Foundations: Studio Practice and Creative Research

Class Standing

This hands-on course introduces students to Evergreen’s creative production facilities through a structured rotation across General Access labs including Photoland, the Podcast Studio, Sound Effects Studio, Lynda Lab Lighting Studio, and the Animation Labs. In each rotation, students build foundational technical skills in darkroom and digital photography, audio recording and podcast production, camera operation and non-linear video editing, and frame-based and digital animation - while exploring how these media function as tools for creative research and artistic inquiry. Studio skill-building is paired with readings, screenings, and discussions drawn from the histories of experimental film, lens-based art, sound art, and expanded media practice.

The course positions media production as a mode of investigation rather than vocational training, introducing students to creative research as a methodology for generating and testing ideas across disciplines. Short production exercises build toward a final integrative project combining skills from multiple media areas. Students leave prepared to work independently in Evergreen’s media facilities and to bring media production into programs across the curriculum.

This class will repeat in spring quarter. Students who register for this class in winter should not register for it again in spring.
