Three intern positions at Mount Rainier National Park are available for summer 2023: one in aquatic ecology, one in ecological restoration, and one with the Longmire Wilderness Information Center (WIC).
The aquatic ecology intern works under the day-to-day supervision of lead biological technicians who assign work and provide instruction. The intern assists in the study, inventory and management of aquatic and wilderness resources. Work in aquatic ecology includes lake, stream, amphibian, fish and invertebrate surveys, and the collection and analysis of lake and stream samples.
The ecological restoration intern works under the day-to-day supervision of a lead restoration specialist who assigns work and provides instruction. The work includes identification of invasive and native plants, GIS mapping, management through manual and chemical methods, greenhouse work, and revegetation with native plants.
The Wilderness Information Center internworks under the day-to-day supervision of the Wilderness Information Center supervisor and lead staff who assign work and provide instruction. The Intern spends 50-60% of their time in the field where the intern supports various monitoring and management efforts in Mount Rainier’s wilderness, including overnight and/or day backcountry patrol hikes to learn the park, to help maintain trails and backcountry structures, to make positive connections with visitors and be available for visitor needs, and to work with other rangers on a variety of projects.
Interns must be current Evergreen undergraduate or graduate students and must register for an Internship Learning Contract for between 4 and 16 credits. The internship begins Monday June 12 and ends on Friday September 8. Interns work 40 hours per week and must serve for the entire 13-week period, regardless of the number of credits for which they have registered. The stipend for the internship is $3500. Housing valued at $600 is provided within or near the park. In addition, each student will receive a stipend of $500 from the Carolynn Dobbs National Research Endowed Internship Fund for a total stipend of $4,000 plus housing.

Natural and Life Sciences, Environmental Studies
As noted, students must register for any number of credits between 4 and 16.
Students must provide their own backpacking/outdoor equipment as required for their position (backpack, boots, raingear, etc.) Where applicable, uniforms are provided.
Upper division science credit may be earned by the aquatics and ecological restoration interns; upper division credit is generally not available to the other positions.
