This program is designed to build on skills learned in The Helping Relationship, giving students the opportunity to practice those skills in deeper applications. This program will support students in developing skills to deliver compassionate, culturally responsive, and competent brief behavioral health interventions.
Students will continue to build competence with essential counseling skills through applying them to the different phases of work with individuals struggling with common mental health challenges. Students will learn the theory informing behavioral health screening and assessment, case conceptualization, treatment planning, interventions, and endings, and will practice working through each phase of this process through role play practice. Students can expect to learn key interventions for addressing common mental health challenges using a brief treatment model, particularly those pulling from a cognitive behavioral perspective.
This program will also introduce ecological systems theory and anti-oppressive practice to deepen students' understanding of the biopsychosocial perspective. Students will use these theories in application to mock client cases, building skills in case conceptualization. They will also learn case coordination skills including team-based care planning, case management and client advocacy. Students will also learn about the policies and ethical codes that shape behavioral health practice and will develop essential skills for coordination of care including writing care plans. Students will learn about measurement-based care and how skills developed in this program fit into that model.
This class will include both in-person synchronous class time and asynchronous work including discussion, collaborative reading and learning, and ongoing practice of skills, particularly critical reflection skills. Students can expect homework in addition to these class activities.
