This program is designed to provide an understanding of behavioral health intervention in the context of healthcare systems. It includes developing competencies in essential counseling skills, screening and assessment, team-based care planning, mental health intervention, and related client advocacy from a health equity perspective. Students will learn how mental health screenings and assessment can help determine appropriate level of care and facilitate the use of evidence-based interventions. Using a bio-psycho-social lens for the conceptualization of client cases, students will learn targeted strategies for addressing depression, anxiety, and substance use. There will be opportunities to practice screening tools and intervention strategies in mock client-counselor interactions. Skills that are central to case management and the coordination of care, like documenting care plans and contributing to an integrated healthcare plan, will be introduced, and practiced. Professional ethics and mental health laws will be considered throughout. Students will deepen their cultural competence and self awareness by strengthening their ability to reflect on their cultural and professional identities and their mental health as it relates to their ability to help others.
