In this introductory course, students will explore foundational graphic design principles and visual communication concepts through project-based learning and creative experimentation. You will develop skills in typography, composition, image-making, and design thinking while gaining an understanding of how visual elements communicate meaning. Course activities emphasize creative exploration, applied technical skills, and professional design workflows.

Through hands-on projects and instructor guidance, you will begin developing both conceptual and technical design skills using industry-standard tools and practices. By the end of the course, you will have established a foundation for further study in graphic design and visual communication.

To participate in this remote-learning course, you will need access to a laptop or desktop computer with a webcam, a multi-core processor, and a minimum of 8GB RAM. Students will also need a digital camera (phone camera is fine), reliable access to the internet, and a flat working surface.

We will use the course site Canvas and meet on Zoom. Synchronous participation in the three-hour weekly class session is required. You can expect to spend an additional 4-6 hours per week completing assignments.

This is the first of three core courses that comprise the Graphic Design Fundamentals Certificate at Evergreen. Courses must be taken in sequential order.
