This class will provide a variety of instruction and assignment work to provide students with a strong foundational understanding of principles and techniques of fine-art drawing. Students will navigate course objectives that will assist in their exploration of drawing materials, graphite, charcoal, and chalks to produce informed studies that prove their ability to execute various technical aspects.
As a class community, we will emphasize learning to draw what can be represented through close observation with and understanding through the interpretation of still life objects and photographic references. Students will learn about conventional drawing techniques that include sighting and measurement, scale and perspective, and value and composition. Students will develop a context for their work through an independent research project. Students will be expected to keep a sketchbook throughout the quarter and complete regular drawing assignments outside of class. A final portfolio of completed assignments will be reviewed at the end of the quarter in a group critique.
Class sessions will be conducted in-person, supplemented with information on an online platform. Assignments are designed to support the beginner through the advanced student. Students can expect to invest 6-8 hours a week to complete all projects outside of class sessions.
