How will you build a deeply satisfying education at Evergreen that empowers your future? How will Evergreen be a part of your lifelong learning and career goals? If you are new or relatively new to Evergreen, or to college, this is an opportunity to build a “custom” education for yourself.
Whether you are returning to college or starting, we will help you begin to design your education to meet professional, personal, and/or educational needs. We will work with you to skillfully navigate this part of your education and life. Together, we will pull back the curtain to help you find the courses and programs that will shape the future you seek. If you aren’t yet sure what your studies will be, we will help you to ask the right questions. We will explore the considerable knowledge and skills you bring with you so that you can plot a sure-footed path to completing your degree.
Cornerstone has a friendly schedule. We will meet for ten Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1:50 p.m. Three of our classes – the first, second, and last – will be in person and on campus so that we can get to know one another and Evergreen’s campus. The remainder will be on Zoom, which will make this late Saturday morning class more convenient for those with full schedules and distances to travel.
We will tour the Olympia campus and many of the educational tools the college has at your disposal. You will meet people from areas like Academic Advising and Careers, the Library, Writing Center, and Quantitative Reasoning Centers and come to understand Evergreen’s educational resources.
You will develop your ability to ask focused questions that can shape your education. We will cut through the fog of “academic speak,” to help you build up one essay that develops a question important for your education and your life. We will consider contemporary debates about education in a democratic society. We will engage in guided writing and research projects, self-assessments, and exercises that strengthen academic reading, writing, speaking, note-taking, and time management skills.
We will share several contemporary, short readings that give us the opportunity to practice “interrogating” and discussing our studies in an academic setting. These lively discussions will build our skills to “read like a writer,” and develop our close reading skills. We will practice revising or learning how to say more closely what we want to say.
Together, we will develop your understanding of Evergreen, of education, and of the academic path that is right for you, so that you will leave the course with confidence and readiness to further your education and your goals.
