Core Studio is a foundational interdisciplinary arts and media program that explores themes, practices, contexts, and questions that are central to contemporary creators. Students from fall quarter's Core Studio: Visual and Media Arts Intensive may continue in this program if they meet expectations for a project proposal. Since Core Studio Projects is focused on self-directed work, it will run similarly to a "Student-Originated Studies" (SOS) program, facilitating independent artistic endeavors embedded in a supportive learning community. Each student will have a role in cultivating this community of creators with distinct voices and experiences.
Continuing from fall, Core Studio Projects will foster broadly applicable creative skills in critical thinking, interpretation, idea development, research, collaboration, critique, and writing through readings, assignments, and discussions. Students will contribute to participatory class sessions and execute projects with input from faculty and peers. By regularly presenting work-in-progress and getting/giving feedback through the critique process, students will learn to articulate their artistic intentions and practices and develop capacities for close attention, description, and interpretation.
A wide range of mediums, genres, and approaches across Visual and Media Arts are possible in this program, provided you demonstrate a strong foundation for success. Predetermined technical workshops will not be offered this quarter, although faculty can advise students about how to access additional skills-based learning. Resources in art studios, media labs, and media loan will be available. The faculty is most experienced in media arts and studies, but willing and able to support visual arts students. The program Advanced Projects in Visual and Media Arts is offered concurrently with a visual arts faculty.
