This program is designed for students who are interested in gaining practitioner experience through connecting with community by interning in a nonprofit organization. Sometime during weeks 8-10 of winter quarter 2023, interested students should contact the faculty (Doreen Swetkis, swetkisd@evergreen.edu) and CCBLA Director (Ellen Shortt Sanchez shorttse@evergreen.edu) about their proposed internship. Students are welcome to seek out their own internship possibilities, and also CCBLA Director Ellen Shortt Sanchez can help connect students with organizations willing to provide internship opportunities. Evergreen's Academic Advising office can help students with completing the in-program internship contract.
Students will hold 10, 20, or 30-hour/week internships (depending upon amount of credits: 8, 12 or 16 credits, respectively) in an organization, and will come to campus for one 4-hour class session per week to learn more about nonprofit administration through seminars, lectures, workshops, guest speakers and/or films. Participation in the 4-hour per week class session is required. There will be common readings, individual written assignments, group work, and a possible field trip to at least one other nonprofit organization. The faculty will connect with the sponsoring organizations during the quarter, and will be readily available to meet with students outside of scheduled class time as needed. Internships, site visits, and meetings with faculty outside of class may occur either in person or remotely. The expectation is that we will be able to meet in person for our weekly class sessions. For folks who plan to intern outside the Olympia region, attending class via Zoom will be an option.
