Engage in a hands-on introduction to Irish traditional culture with faculty member Sean Williams, who for thirty years led dozens of Evergreen students on study abroad visits to Ireland. We will begin by making arán donn (Irish brown bread) and getting it started in the oven. Then we’ll work through some folkloric concepts about the harvest season by exploring the calendrical cycle, learning songs associated with the summer, and enjoying an introduction to the Irish-Gaelic language. We will wrap up our time together by sampling the brown bread with Irish butter, fresh out of the oven.

Using natural plant dyes from plants foraged from The Evergreen State College, create your own personalized bandana with colorful bursts and patterns. Led by House of Welcome Director Laura VerMeulen, this hands-on workshop offers an opportunity to learn about Indigenous arts, cultural traditions, and relationships to the natural world. Held in the Fiber Arts Studio, Paimārire, a space inspired by Evergreen's relationships with Māori artists and arts organizations in New Zealand, participants will create while connecting with Indigenous creativity and place-based learning. Your bandana will be pressed with an iron before you leave to set the color.

Step into Photoland’s black-and-white darkroom and experience the magic of making photograms! In this hands-on workshop, you’ll create one-of-a-kind images by placing objects directly onto light-sensitive paper and exposing them to light. All materials will be provided, but feel free to bring along small personal objects to experiment with. Items like leaves, flowers, lace, keys, interesting textures, or translucent materials tend to produce especially striking results.

At Evergreen, students, staff, and faculty are in the midst of multiple conversations about Artificial Intelligence. Will AI be as disruptive as its critics suggest? Will it offer the benefits its champions claim? What are faculty and students doing with AI models in Evergreen classrooms? What will students want to know about AI in the workplaces they are heading toward? Join us for a conversation about the ethics, economics, and politics of AI today and in the future.

Get a taste of Evergreen's hands-on approach to learning at this pickling workshop on the Organic Farm. Using freshly harvested vegetables grown by current students, participants will learn the basics of food preservation and canning while exploring the farm's seasonal harvest. Organic Farm Manager, Beth Leimbach ’94, and student farmers will provide a step-by-step demonstration of the pickling process, and each participant will take home their own jar of pickled vegetables. Fun fact: pickling is one of the oldest methods of preserving food, dating back more than 4,000 years.

Shuttle rides to and from the farm are available:

• Shuttles to the farm: 2:15 - 2:30 pm
• Shuttles back to campus: 3:45 - 4 pm
