Incompletes

Incompletes

An incomplete is given when a student has not completed the required work, but could complete it given some additional time or when delays in reporting have occurred.

If you are receiving an incomplete, this will be shared at your evaluation conference with your faculty member. Faculty will share the details of the work that needs to be completed and a when the work will be due. You and your faculty member will fill out an Incomplete Form that includes when the work will be completed. If the work is not completed within the designated timeline, it will automatically convert to no credit.

Faculty members initiate the incomplete and submit it to you. You must acknowledge the incomplete. If you do not acknowledge it, the faculty member may:

  • Award reduced credit
  • Give no credit
  • Confirm the incomplete on behalf of the student when conditions make it difficult for the student to acknowledge

The maximum deadline for completion of the incomplete work is the end of the third quarter following the filing of the incomplete. In the case of work left incomplete in Spring Quarter, the deadline for completion is the end of the next Winter Quarter. Deadlines may be shorter if desired. At the end of the maximum deadline, any unresolved incomplete will automatically convert to no credit.

Exceptions to the automatic conversion to no credit can only be obtained by faculty petition and approval by the academic deans. Adjunct faculty may not award incompletes with a due date beyond the end of their current contract without consultation with the dean overseeing evaluations.

Students with financial aid should check with the Registrar and Financial Aid to ensure an incomplete will not interfere with their funding.
