Students will study the techniques and approaches used in crafting effective, evocative memoirs. A memoir is not an essay. It is a form of storytelling, closely related to fiction. In fact, memoir is often referred to as “creative nonfiction,” and, as students will discover, the dividing line between the two genres can sometimes be ephemeral at best. The main difference appears to be that a memoir is based upon a factual incident and the writer’s recollection/interpretation of it. That said, a good and satisfying memoir and a good and satisfying work of fiction have the same root: good storytelling.
