Good analysis means nothing if it cannot be communicated effectively. This course develops students' ability to design clear, honest, and compelling data visualizations for professional and public audiences. Students work with tools including Tableau Public, Excel charting, and basic Python or R, selecting the tool appropriate to their professional context. Special attention is given to accessibility, equity, and the ethics of visual persuasion.
- Principles of visual encoding
- Chart types and when to use them
- Color, accessibility, and audience
- Dashboards and interactive visualization
- Introduction to Python or R for visualization
- Telling a complete data story: context, insight, call to action
In addition to our weekly meetings, students will be expected to spend an hour each week doing substantive work on discussion boards based on work done in our class sessions. This is in addition to regular homework assignments.
