This interdisciplinary study-abroad program offers an introduction to Chinese language and culture. Students will visit and study at university in Taiwan to learn about the cultural and business centers, and witness modern, traditional, urban, and rural life. Discover how Chinese traditional culture exists in a modern society. The program includes language and culture lessons, day trips, hands-on learning, and guided tours to museums, cultural halls, and other historical and geo sites in Taiwan. Students can also taste authentic Chinese and Taiwanese cuisine and visit local markets.

Cultural competency is essential for those interested in international trade or intercultural communication. We will learn about Taiwan’s modern development, and how their people cope with the fast growing economic system. Expect to also experience different religions and folk faiths.

Enroll for 12 credits for full session, or 8 credits for summer second session study trip only. During the first part of summer, students will begin their learning of language and culture and to prepare for a 3 week study trip in Taiwan including two weeks study in Taipei as well as one week tour of the rest of the island. Scholarships may be offered so check with the faculty for more information. Students who returned to the US after the study trip can produce multimedia reflections and reports/presentation and earn additional credits for continuous Chinese learning. All participating students will be asked to document the study trip for final journal report.
