ECE: STEAM with Young Children This course explores how to create and implement integrated science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics or STEAM activities for young children from infancy to age eight and incorporating a multicultural approach. Developmentally appropriate mathematics instruction for young children is emphasized. Activity planning, child observation and assessment, teacher reflective practices and documenting learning using digital technology will be explored through hands-on projects with young children.

Learning Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of this course the student will be able to:

  • Plan and carry out developmentally appropriate, integrated, inquiry-based science, technology, engineering, arts, and math, [STEAM] activities for children from infancy to age eight that address number and operations, patterns, functions and algebra, geometry and spatial concepts, measurement, and graphing.
  • Incorporate thinking routines and deep questioning in their STEAM activity plans to develop critical thinking skills in young children.
  • Use authentic assessment tools to observe and assess children’s learning in the STEM areas.
  • Use digital technology in developmentally appropriate ways with young children to further learning.
  • Document children’s STEAM learning to foster the home-school connection.
  • Reflect on their teaching practices and evaluate their effectiveness as a STEAM teacher.
