Good reading skills are essential to success in college and beyond. Yet many students do not read as thoroughly, deeply, or effectively as they could. What are the best means of “reading for keeps”—of developing more permanent and rewarding relationships with books, especially in an age of endless electronic distractions? In this intensive class, students will build their skills and understanding via a range of highly effective strategies, such as textual analysis, rereading, response writing, and recitation. Together we will apply these practices to lively texts in a range of forms, including modern fiction, creative nonfiction, and epic and lyric poetry. Specific readings will include Muriel Sparks’ The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, William Golding’s Lord of the Flies, and Annie Dillard’s essay “Total Eclipse.” Our overall objective is to become more committed, resourceful, and insightful readers. Students who register for eight credits will read and research additional texts that pertain to their academic concentration or individual interests.
