The Black freedom struggle and the women’s liberation movement, while growing from historical roots, won fundamental changes in American laws, institutions, and culture in the 1950s – 1970s. What was it about these movements that resonated and began to revolutionize our thinking about race and gender? What was it about this time that made their impact so forceful? What can we understand about today’s debates around “revisionist” history, reproductive rights, and gender identity by studying these movements?
Historical thinking and cultural analysis will be central to our studies. Students will learn to “do” history through individual research projects, sharing their findings with the community.
Credit will be awarded in 20 Century US History and Literature.
