Master in Teaching Fall, Winter, Spring: Quarters 2, 3, & 4
The 2nd, 3rd, and 4th quarters of the MiT ML Pathway will continue the work of learning to teach while centering the voices and experiences of Multilingual Learners.
In the fall (quarter 2), the focus is on the integration of content and language. At the end of August, as teachers return to school, you will participate in a part-time field experience in a classroom which will provide a glimpse into how teachers begin the year with students. During this experience, you will complete a series of field assignments that allow you to learn about your school community and the students in your classroom. When classes officially begin at Evergreen, you will continue with your part-time field experience in addition to attending classes at Evergreen. Each strand will leverage the integration and alignment of content and language for multilingual learners and will emphasize students’ meaning-making in the content areas, language learning, and interactions in cooperative and shared learning environments.
Praxis strands (i.e. content area methods of instruction) will focus on the design and implementation of curriculum, instruction, and assessment with an emphasis on language development expectations, designing lessons using Washington State Standards, and applying strategies for multilingual learners. Teacher Candidates will complete 150 hours of their ML practicum.
In the winter (quarter 3), you will continue focusing on the integration of content and language. You will transition to a content area field experience and will continue in a part-time field experience. You will engage in lesson planning, analyzing student work, teaching mini lessons, and connect with families and community in both your field experience and your program strands. In addition, you will begin the work of developing the skills to conduct your Master's Project on a question you have related to planning, teaching, and/or assessment of students. All your work this quarter will continue to center the practices that support all students and in particular, language learners, in your classrooms.
Spring (Quarter 4) quarter, you will transition to full days in your field experience, Monday through Friday. To build a network of support and engage in reflective practices, you will meet one afternoon/evening each week for a field seminar. During these sessions, you will have an opportunity to discuss problems of practice in the classroom and further develop and complete your Master's Project which includes, but is not limited to, creating a student growth goal, designing an instructional unit based on educational research, tracking student growth across the quarter, and presenting your insights in a public presentation of your Master’s Project.
