Israel is a distinct nation, yet there are many Israels. In 1948 the country was founded in conflict and its status is still debated today. Students will learn the many ways that Israel has mattered and to whom, and examine competing interests and criticisms of the country in the context of history. A wide range of texts and films will illustrate diverse experiences and claims. Students will write weekly papers about the topics under study which include religion, immigration, the state and Zionism, land disputes, the environment, and contemporary onlookers and visionaries.

This course will meet synchronously online. Students will need reliable internet and the ability to meet on Zoom. All written texts, films, and pre-recorded lectures will be available on Canvas.
