This advanced literary arts program is for students ready to develop major writing projects (fiction, poetry, plays, screenwriting, experimental writing, or critical literary studies) and are prepared to dedicate significant time and attention to being practicing writers in a collaborative and supportive environment. This program offers the structure, feedback, and ambitious peer group you need to pursue advanced or capstone manuscript work. ("Capstone" simply indicates that your project represents a major culmination of your academic and creative work.)
In addition to building dynamic peer groups for support and critique, you will learn new strategies and concepts to help drive and improve your writing. Substantive feedback from faculty and peers will challenge you to revise deeply and take your work seriously. Workshops, lectures, and readings will help you to see the writing process and the critique process with new depth and enthusiasm.
In seminar, you will examine the discourse around literary craft and theory and study examples of great writing. You will also explore professional practices for writers, with an emphasis on seeking publication and sharing your practice through teaching and public speaking.
Our schedule will be variable and will include weekend "retreats" on campus (see schedule).
