This introductory course is specially designed to introduce students to the research process and enhance students’ abilities in research design, data collection, and analysis. Course material will focus on introducing philosophy, terminology, concepts, and principles that underlie quantitative and qualitative research. Within this context, we will explore how knowledge claims (i.e., claims about “new public knowledge”) are presented and supported and the advantages and limitations associated with these different approaches.
Student work will include written assignments and class discussions designed to enhance their understanding of quantitative and qualitative research and how each approach is applied in practice. Beyond enhancing their understanding of research design, data collection, and analysis, students will become more knowledgeable and better able to assess the merits of quantitative and qualitative studies. This course is designed to provide a solid foundation for advanced research methods and the design and implementation of future research projects.
