This one-quarter course teaches the foundations of music theory, ear training, and composition. Students will build skills in reading and writing music, and develop an understanding of pitch, scale, chord, and beyond. Through ear training labs, students will gain a core ability to conceptualize what they hear as they hear it, recognizing pitches and rhythms and transcribing them onto the music staff. Through small projects, students will have the opportunity to apply the theory concepts we learn to their own creative work. Prior experience in music is helpful but not required. This course lays the groundwork for continued study in winter and spring quarters.
