In this 4-credit course students will learn basic metalsmithing skills to create small-scale wearable, functional, or sculptural metal objects. Using brass, copper, and sterling silver, students will explore their own artistic interests while learning technical skills including piercing and sawing, using a flex shaft, riveting, soldering, texturing, and polishing.

Presentations and readings on contemporary and historical artists' work will aide students in conceptualizing their work. Students will receive critical analysis through peer critiques in written form and in group discussions. They will produce reflective work in the form of an artist statement to accompany their finished projects.

Students will receive kits with all the materials necessary to complete their projects. They may purchase extra materials if desired.

All class meetings will be in person.
