This class will provide students with a strong foundational understanding of the principles and elements of design to better drive their own design and communicate in the language of design. Students will learn to use a variety of drawing media, including graphite, stamp-making, charcoal, technical pens, and ink, as well as more experimental mark-making methods and tools to produce informed design studies that demonstrate a variety of technical methods.
Students will learn analog design process and hone their editing skills through creating hand-colored, stamped, drawn compositions that are grounded in established design precepts. Students will develop a context for their work through an independent research project, maintain a sketchbook practice throughout the quarter, the creation of a set of working drawings, and complete regular design and drawing assignments outside of class. Students will practice regular feedback sessions through small and large process critiques and a final project group critique on the final class meeting. The textbook for the class is: "Design! A Lively Guide to Design Basics for Artists & Craftspeople by Steven Aimone ISBN: 1-57990-349-5. This is an inexpensive textbook best bound at online used book outlets.
Class sessions will be conducted in person. Assignments will support the growth of skills in all students, regardless of skill level. Students can expect to invest 6-8 hours a week to complete all projects outside of class sessions.
