Students in this course will cultivate a critical understanding of children's literature in a global context, from classic fairy tales to contemporary novels. We'll delve into the challenges and opportunities of reading children's literature across cultural and linguistic borders by reading a selection of works from around the world, as well as secondary readings to help cultivate our understanding of literary and translation theory. We'll also explore the ways in which particular works of children's literature are assigned value and meaning through mechanisms such as syllabus inclusion, book banning, award winning, and intermedial adaptation.
