Creative Writing: Playing with Words and Worlds

This creative writing program is designed for the curious, the passionate, the dabbler, and the wanderer. Whether you've written fiction or poetry for years or you'd like to try it for the first time, this program will introduce you to playful techniques for generating and improving your work and teach you how to give and take feedback within a supportive community. Whether creative writing is your focus or just something you want to explore, this program will introduce you to ways of linking the creative process, story, and meaning with other ways of thinking and with critical tools that will serve you in many aspects of study and life.

Each week, lectures will explore aspects of the writing craft, imaginative reading practices, and features of the literary arts necessary for pursuing and enjoying a life with books. Seminars will introduce close reading practices that can transform literary texts (and any text) into experiences of incredible depth and sometimes shocking strangeness. You'll encounter some of the most transformative ideas in literary thinking that continue to challenge how we think about the world. Weekly workshops will introduce methods for developing, revising, and examining works-in-progress.

You will finish the program with a number of writing experiments, a work of your own devising that you've developed through successive revisions, new tools and techniques for continuing your writing practice, and new ways of reading that will level up your experience of literature.  

While this program is designed for anyone, it is an excellent choice for those considering pursuing Entry-level study in the "Literary Arts and Studies Path" and the "Humanities: Culture, Text, and Language Path".

This program incorporates  Greener Foundations . Greener Foundations is Evergreen’s in-person 2-quarter introductory student success course, which provides all first-year students with the skills and knowledge they need to thrive at Evergreen. First-year students who register for 14 credits in this program will be placed into Greener Foundations for an additional 2 credits, totaling 16 credits. Once first-year students have been placed into Greener Foundations, they will receive an email confirming their registration status.
