This one-quarter course continues the study of music theory, ear training, and composition begun in fall quarter. Students will build on their foundation in reading and writing music, extending their understanding into chromatic harmony, secondary function, and modulation. Through ear training labs, students will continue developing the core ability to conceptualize what they hear as they hear it, working with increasingly complex pitches, rhythms, and harmonic motion as they transcribe them onto the music staff. Through small projects, students will have the opportunity to apply these expanded theory concepts to their own creative work. Completion of the fall quarter course, or equivalent prior study, is recommended. This course builds on the foundations established in fall quarter and lays the groundwork for continued study in spring.
