As writers, we sift through our lives to excavate and share powerful stories. In “Autobiography, Story, and Poetry: Dancing with Words,” students will explore how to craft “stories of self” that vibrantly capture turning points large or small. Writers may draw from autobiography, fiction, creative non-fiction, essays, poetry, flash fiction, slam poetry or other genres. The result for each student will be a drafted and revised collection of writing.

We will have writing exercises, lectures, workshops, and activities to enhance creativity and experiment with different types of writing. Guest writers/authors will provide unique exposure to experiential insights on writing and craft. Students will gain literary insights from these guest authors and faculty members who they may wish to work with in summer and beyond.

Students will work with critique groups in the class and with the Evergreen Writing Center. Nancy will be regularly available to meet and partner with students individually, always with an emphasis on what the student wants to build and accomplish.

The first class will be Tuesday, April 3. Our first reading will be Dear America, Notes of an Undocumented Citizen. Students may learn more at the Academic Fair on Weds. March 8 from 4 to 6 p.m. or may contact Nancy A. Parkes at parkesn@evergreen.edu.
