Institute Description: In this interactive two-day Community-Initiated Summer Institute, participants will engage with the pedagogy of TESC Tacoma, past, present, and future, including our more recent addition of a dual language approach, our Early Childhood Education Emphasis. Grounding ourselves in the history of TESC Tacoma and its founders, Dr Maxine Mimms and Dr Joye Hardiman, we will examine Evergreen Tacoma’s Lyceum as the backbone of our interdisciplinary curriculum. We will center our RICH values (Reciprocity, Inclusivity, Civility, and Hospitality), our Five Foci (emphasizing, Learning Across Significant Differences), and our Six Expectations (emphasizing, Participate Collaboratively and Responsibly in our Diverse Society). We will outline the Soy Bilingüe Adult Dual Language (ADL) model, where half the course is led in Spanish and half is led in English and all cultures of the learning community are valued and included. Come ready for painting, working with clay, poetry, acting, singing, dancing, and drumming.
Participant Learning Outcomes: We will examine Evergreen Tacoma’s Lyceum as the backbone of our interdisciplinary curriculum. This core section of the Evergreen-Tacoma program is designed to lay out prerequisite definitions, concepts, and conceptual understandings necessary to successfully complete program objectives. Lyceum is a place of exploration and community building, an opportunity to develop a common vocabulary and to share experiences. It is also a place for reflection, dialogue, interrogation, integration, and application. We will center our RICH values (Reciprocity, Inclusivity, Civility, and Hospitality), our Five Foci (emphasizing, Learning Across Significant Differences), and our Six Expectations (emphasizing, Participate Collaboratively and Responsibly in our Diverse Society). We will outline the Soy Bilingüe Adult Dual Language (ADL) model developed by the Center for Linguistic and Cultural Democracy, where half the course is led in Spanish and half is led in English and all languages and cultures of the learning community are valued and included. We will model the ways that we focus on student Interests and the Issues impacting students, their families, and their communities.
