Sample Language for Syllabus/Class Agreement Statements
Syllabi and Classroom Agreements are a great opportunity to educate every student about classroom and course expectations, as well as their rights and resources on campus. We encourage faculty to include a statement regarding Title IX and your role as a Responsible Employee into your class document – and to communicate with your students early in the quarter about your responsibility.
Below is a sample statement; feel free to make it your own:
The Evergreen State College is committed to providing a safe learning environment for all students that is free of all forms of discrimination and harassment, including sexual assault, domestic/relationship violence, sexual harassment, stalking, and retaliation. I am committed to your well-being and safety, and am open to discuss any concerns you may have.
Please know that I am a Responsible Employee – meaning that in certain situations, I am legally obligated to share information with the College’s Title IX Coordinator to help ensure a student’s safety and that care is being addressed.
Although I have to notify the Title IX Coordinator, it will be up to you to control how your case is handled, including whether to pursue a formal complaint or legal action. The goal is to make sure you are aware of the range of options available to you and have access to the resources you need.
