Saving History—Retouching Your Treasures…and More

Session Description: 

Learn to restore your treasures and interesting ways to care for your home library and favorite photos.  For the home librarian, this informal session will introduce concepts of library preservation as well as provide a fun and informative hands-on practical session exploring the techniques of conservation inpainting.  Evergreen archivist Randy Stilson ’77 has invited Justin Johnson ’05 and Caryn Dudley ’13, who will be there to share their expertise, answer your questions and help you with your projects.

Facilitator Biographies:

Justin Johnson

Justin Johnson '05: Justin is a 2005 graduate of Evergreen, where he was intensely focused on Library Sciences and Conservation. He went on to study the conservation of books and library materials at West Dean College and The University of Sussex, earning his Master’s. An active member of the American Institute of Conservation, he contributed to the Book and Paper Group Annual from 2010 to 2013. He has taught bookbinding and conservation domestically since returning to the US, and looks forward to teaching opportunities in Mexico this fall. He has worked internationally and domestically and until recently served as Book Conservator at The Huntington Library in San Marino, CA.  He has now taken on new challenges as Senior Conservator at the University of Washington Libraries.

Caryn Dudley

Caryn Dudley '13: Caryn studied archives and conservation under Randy Stilson before graduating in the spring of 2013. She has volunteered her skills at Western Washington University, working on the children's literature collection, and continues to learn and practice on her own time. She currently works for the writing centers at both Evergreen and South Puget Sound Community College, and intends to continue her study of conservation in graduate school next year.

Randy Stilson

Randy Stilson '77, College Archivist and Records Manager:  W. Randolph Stilson studied conservation/preservation as a Master’s of Librarianship graduate of the University of Washington. He was a founder of the Conservation Associates of the Pacific Northwest (CAPNW), and for several years practiced as a conservator in Western Washington with partner and former State Archivist Sidney McAlpin in a company called Documents & Records: Conservation, Preservation, Restoration LLC (DR CPR LLC). He has taught numerous workshops and sponsored individual contracts in library and archival materials conservation.
