Connor Murphy: Farm Manager
This is Connor’s ninth season in organic farming and his first year on the Organic Farm. He was born and raised in Santa Cruz, CA, but his first job in farming led him to Ft. Collins, CO, where he worked on a 2,200 acre organic vegetable and grain farm. Beginning as Farm Apprentice, he helped to start and manage the poultry and livestock program on the farm. After working four seasons on organic production farms, Connor spent four more seasons as the CSA Farm Manager at Growing Gardens, an urban-agriculture non-profit in Boulder, CO where he learned the power of combining agriculture and education.
On the TESC Organic Farm, Connor relishes the opportunity to interact closely with people from diverse backgrounds and comfort levels with agriculture, teaching and learning every day.
Favorite crop: Heirloom tomatoes are the best!
Dave has been a member of the Evergreen State College faculty since 2007 where he teaches Sustainable Agriculture. Dave left Evergreen in 2009 to become the Education Director and Farm Manager at 21 Acres in Woodinville, WA. He returned to Evergreen as a permanent faculty member in 2010. Prior to coming to Evergreen in 2007, Dave was the Research and Outreach Coordinator for the WSU Small Farms Program. While at WSU his research focused on alternative nontoxic control of cabbage maggot and carrot rust fly. He also started the now very popular Farmwalk series while a member of the Tilth Producers of Washington Board of Directors.
He received his BS in Zoology and MS in Botany at Clemson University, and his PhD from Texas A&M University in Entomology with a focus on Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and Toxicology. Prior to coming to work for the WSU Small Farm Program, Dave was an Associate Professor of Biology at The University of Utah teaching Human Physiology, Entomology and biochemistry. Dave was a National Institutes of Mental Health Post Doctoral Research Fellow at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, working on Insect Developmental Neuroendocrinology.
Dave’s goal for the farm is to have it the best teaching farm in the country. He wants it to support every type of farming a student might want to pursue as a potential career. The vision is for the farm to be a model for cutting edge approaches to organic farming, i.e., farmscaping for pest management.
Beth: Farm Assistant Manager
Beth has been farming organically since she took the first Practice of Sustainable Agriculture program at Evergreen in 1992. After graduation in 1994, she became the Organic Farm Caretaker until 2002, worked on small farms, and also worked for a landscaper. From 2000-2002 she served as the Master Gardener for the Nisqually Tribe, bringing fresh food to the Elders, training youth, and re-establishing native food plants. From 2002-2011 she was the Farm Production Manager for Left Foot Organics, a 3- acre non-profit organic farm that employed people with disabilities and youth and engaged community volunteers. After Left Foot closed, she became the Farm Manager for GRuB (Garden Raised Bounty) another local non-profit (founded by Greeners!) that serves disengaged youth through an alternative farm school.
Beth was excited to return to Evergreen in 2015 to work with student farmers and help the farm program grow. In addition to her work at Evergreen, she works in her own business, GreenActs, as a garden designer and small farm consultant; volunteers with the Native Plant Salvage Project; performs improvisational theater with The Heartsparkle Players (also started by Greeners!); and directs an a cappella choir at Temple Beth Hatfiloh in downtown Olympia.
Favorite Crop: Since she thinks all plants are amazing, she can’t choose just one!
Butch: Pest Management Solutions
Butch has been with the farm since 2011. According to local legend Butch arrived in the dark of night, like a shadow with golden eyes--seen between the hours of 10pm and 7am most often--wrapped in a basket, with a warning note about his sheer skill as a hunter. Butch is most inspired by territory preservation, be it the farm perimeter, a basket he's intrigued with, chairs not yet graced with his fuzz, though he favors available laps.
