Seattle-based musicians Macklemore and producer Ryan Lewis won four awards at the 56th Grammy Awards on January 26, picking up trophies for best new artist, for best rap album (“The Heist”), and two awards for best rap song and performance, with “Thrift Shop.”
Macklemore, otherwise known as Ben Haggerty, attended Evergreen in 2004 and 2005, graduating in 2009. Dressed for the live broadcast in an evergreen velvet tuxedo, Macklemore thanked his local fans as he accepted the awards.
Macklemore and Lewis sang their hit, “Same Love,” with Queen Latifah, who married 33 gay and straight couples during the song.
