Olympia High School Wins Mathleague.org Washington State High School Math Championship

On April 24th The Evergreen State College hosted the mathleague.org Washington State High School Math Championships. On the same day, similar competitions were held throughout the United States with high school students vying to qualify for an invitation to the national math competition. Olympia High School, Tumwater High School, and Stadium High School all had students qualify for this year’s state championship tournament. In order to qualify, students had to be one of the top finishers at The Evergreen State College High School Math Meet held in February, or successfully complete a paper and pencil qualifying exam.

The following results were announced at an awards ceremony on Saturday:

Team winners:

  • 1st place (Champions) Olympia High School (Kirsten Allen, Konane Bay, Mira Early, William Hoza, James Malloy, Austin Miner, and Yuchen Mou)
  • 2nd place: Stadium High School (Erik Chou, Chris Han, Richard Lee, and Kyle Whitcomb)
  • 3rd place: Tumwater High School (Dylan MacKenzie)

Overall individual winners:

  • 1st place: Erik Chou, Stadium High School
  • 2nd place: William Hoza, Olympia High School
  • 3rd place: Austin Miner, Olympia High School

Grade level winners:
(there were no 9th graders who qualified for the state tournament)

10th grade

  • 1st place: William Hoza, Olympia High School
  • 2nd place: Chris Han, Stadium High School
  • 3rd place: Dylan Mackenzie, Tumwater High School

11th grade

  • 1st place: Austin Miner, Olympia High School
  • 2nd place: Yuchen Mou, Olympia High School
  • 3rd place: Kirsten Allen, Olympia High School

12 grade

  • 1st place: Erik Chou, Stadium High School
  • 2nd place: Richard Lee, Stadium High School
  • * There were only two seniors competing
