Do you have an interest in creating film or video projects? Are you working on a short project, but need your skills sharpened? This hands-on class is designed for beginners and intermediate students looking to gain or hone skills in project story development, camera, sound, lighting, and editing. You will not only practice basic skills in project development and film analysis, but will learn or deepen cinematography foundations (image design and frame composition), and practice a variety of production exercises using cell phones/video cameras, sound gear, lighting and editing software. This course is for Evergreen students and community members interested in learning media production, or any student looking to incorporate video work into their field of study or ILC.

By the end of the course, you will have completed a project proposal and/or script for a short project, analyzed a variety of films (nonfiction, fiction, experimental), and conducted a series of production exercises. Specific exercises may include: image design, composition and framing, field recording, hand-held and tripod work, interview practice, film analysis, and the editing of a short exercise.
No prior experience is required, but those with production experience are encouraged to take the class, which can be scaled for any level.

Our class and campus will be working around Covid-19 protocols and your access to Media Services production gear or labs will depend on statewide protocols at the time of the class. Lessons will be remote using Zoom and Canvas with with workshops designed to be done on your own. If possible, you can check out production equipment from Media Services on campus [no gear will be shipped] or use your own. The class will meet synchronously at least 2 times a week (Wednesdays and Fridays) and you will complete additional coursework asynchronously. The course requires you to have access to a reliable, high-speed internet connection and computer for class sessions, asynchronous lessons, and assignments.

The faculty will offer alternatives if conditions or illness prevent students from accessing synchronous meetings, which will allow students to earn comparable credit. Any potential in-person activities will include an asynchronous option for those not able to attend.

The first class meets at 11AM on 7/28/20 and the class sessions run on Wednesdays and Fridays in weeks 6, 7 and 8 of the second session. All registered students should look for an email early summer with an important survey to help prep the class workshops.

*If conditions allow, the following activities will be in person: equipment pickup, hands-on workshops or production exercises related to technical equipment and/or video production skills building.
