Real Analysis is the branch of Mathematics that studies the properties of real numbers, sequences and series of real numbers, and functions from the real numbers to the real numbers. In this course, we’ll undertake a careful study of the structure of the real numbers / number line, and then we’ll use that understanding to rigorously develop differentiation and integration, the primary tools of Calculus. Time permitting, we’ll also undertake a careful study of sequences and series.   

Our work in this course will be conducted using a pedagogy called Inquiry-Based Learning (IBL), which aims to have students construct knowledge in a subject area for themselves, working from first principles and without a textbook. The bulk of our class time in this course will consist of students presenting and discussing their solutions to problems. Many students who take IBL courses report that those courses are among the most transformative educational experiences they’ve ever had.  

This sequence of courses is a standalone module in the Mathematical Systems program. Contact the faculty to take this as a 4 credits/quarter module in that program.
