This program will explore how psychology is being integrated in the theory and practice of Mind Body Medicine in diverse health care settings nationally and internationally. The program will study the fields of health psychology and abnormal psychology through both evidence based medicine and traditional holistic medical models from civilizations including China, India and Japan. The program will look at how clinical psychologists and health psychologists are working in primary care settings in collaborative care practice models. The program will also explore the need to develop integrative health practices to promote immune system support, emotional resilience and prevention in the face of climate change and public health needs.
Fall Quarter will introduce integrative health models from both the field of health psychology and mindbody medicine from multicultural medical perspectives that are based on seasons, diet and emotional intelligence to promote health and wellness. Winter and Spring Quarters will continue the study of multicultural systems of health in the context of abnormal psychology, diet and interpersonal neurobiology. The program will explore how emotional intelligence is becoming an integral part of health care treatment in both psychology and allied health fields within a multidisciplinary health team to provide the best patient outcomes. The program will explore how applied integrative health practices can be foundational in creating a culture of prevention and wellness.
Students will have the opportunity to design their own integrative health based project studies during the first part of Winter Quarter, implement their projects over Winter - Spring and assess their efficacy during the last part of Spring Quarter.
Students will have an opportunity to learn in many ways in diverse modalities, including working with multiple intelligences and mindfulness practices. We will integrate somatic learning into our studies, including movement, qigong (a Chinese system of physical exercises and breathing control), and expressive arts workshops. Our inquiry will ask us to attune ourselves to the wisdom that is available and present in our mind-body awareness through somatic and expressive arts labs. We will participate in community readings, rigorous writing assignments, and study of important texts. The program will include both synchronous and asynchronous learning opportunities.
To successfully participate in students will need access to a 5 foot by 5 foot space for movement, a webcam, and internet access to access video and online video platforms. Students will need to purchase a textbook with an access code to an online learning platform. Students should expect to participate in 5 hours of synchronous learning each week using Zoom and Canvas. Students will participate in 15 hours a week of asynchronous learning through program readings, mindbody practices and online learning platforms.
