From monitoring forests and wetlands to evaluating changes in rivers and shorelines to 3D modeling of urban settings drones are increasingly used in many types of environmental analysis. This class will introduce students to methods for capturing and integrating drone imagery into a geographic information system (GIS) workflow for map creation, geospatial analysis, and story mapping.

Students will learn mapping principles while using Evergreen's drone instruments. Drone flights will be instructed by Evergreen's FAA-certified drone pilots, with student hands-on participation. Students will learn how mission-planning practices support the programming of drone flights, for generating mosaics of drone imagery collections, integrating hundreds of individual drone photos into a seamless GIS image layer and map.

Images captured by Evergreen's multispectral drone will let students learn how to assess vegetation health and analyze near-infrared spectral bands for computing vegetation index layers. Multispectral imagery is used by researchers and land managers for characterizing farms and forests, marine vegetation, and many other natural environments.

ArcGISDrone to MapArcGIS Pro

All students will be granted a software license to Esri and Esri software at no cost for conducting the image processing workflows, using Evergreen's scientific computing lab. The course will cover the integration of ground control points for minimizing spatial error in the image mosaics. The resulting orthoimages and elevation models can be integrated into other GIS platforms for map-making and creation of story maps.

Each week students will create maps and 3D models of the landscape in a fully hands-on learning experience. No previous GIS knowledge is required to take this course. There is no prerequisite to take this course. Students who are taking the "Flying with Drones" course concurrently will find this course to be a natural follow-on toward the scientific application of drone imagery and GIS integration.
