General Chemistry with Laboratory A is the first course in a three-part, year-long general chemistry sequence.

Chemistry is the foundation for everything around us and relates to everything we do. These courses provide the fundamental principles of general chemistry. They also provide the  prerequisites for advanced chemistry, environmental sciences , health sciences, and medical offerings. These courses also provide a basic laboratory science for students seeking a well rounded liberal arts education.

General Chemistry with Laboratory A (8 credits)

This is the first course in a year-long general chemistry sequence, offered during daytime hours. Topics covered in fall quarter include unit conversions, stoichiometry, types of reactions, electron structures, and chemical bonding and will include related laboratory experiments.

Students successfully completing General Chemistry A have two options to complete a full year of chemistry. They can move on to General Chemistry B and C in winter and spring quarters, offered during daytime hours; alternately, students can take General Chemistry II and III during the evenings in winter and spring quarters.

Winter and Spring Offerings

General Chemistry with Laboratory B (4 credits; winter)

General Chemistry B builds upon material covered in General Chemistry A. Topics covered in winter quarter include thermodynamics, electrochemistry, and  chemical kinetics. Lab work will complement in-class learning.

Students can take General Chemistry B as a stand-alone course, or in conjunction with the 12-credit section of General Biology in winter and spring quarters.

General Chemistry with Laboratory C (4 credits; spring)

Topics covered in the final course of the year-long sequence includes  chemical equilibria, acid-base equilibria, pH , and other related topics, as well as lab work.

Students can take General Chemistry C as a stand-alone course, or in conjunction with the 12-credit section of General Biology in spring quarter.
