This course is designed to further develop technical painting skills, expressly through representation of the nude figure. It will provide a foundation for painting with gouache (an opaque watercolor) on paper. At the same time, the focus will be on personal interpretation and expression, while working analytically and responsively to nature. A range of home studio assignments will be assigned to improve fluency in painting the figure as well as to explore issues related to making figurative work and engaging the human body. No prerequisites are required, though a background in the basics of drawing is recommended. This class will cover a wide range of technical, observational and pictorial issues, with some exploration of abstraction.

Students can expect up to 8 hours of remote meeting per week and 6-8 hours of asynchronous coursework/independent work time per week, using Canvas and Zoom. I will offer alternative assignments and ways of participating if conditions or illness prevent students from accessing our synchronous meetings, which will allow students to earn comparable credit.
